Since most of us had to learn the intricacies of our instruments without the presence of a grand master, the old tried and true method came into play: out came the phonograph or cassette player. Maybe the beginning didn’t give us much trouble, but there was always that one spot, that ONE LICK that, no matter what, eluded us. So back over it we went, over and over until the tape, the vinyl or what have you (to say nothing of our loved ones patience) was about gone. And then of course, quite often the thing was not in tune with our instrument which, in sum added to cacophony.

Things have changed. Tascam has come out with a little box they call the Portable Trainer. It’s simple. Slip the CD in. Pick up your instrument (instead of having to juggle it around as before) cut the tempo in HALF, and not lose the pitch, which is adjustable. Getting better at it? Then you can gradually up the speed, without changing the pitch! If the capo is on, put it in a key you can play along with.

Here are some more tantalizing gadgets with this. You don’t need to fiddle with external boxes for reverb, echo and the like---all the while balancing the instrument you paid good money for. Additionally, each trainer has a “cancel” button which puts the main instrument (vocal, guitar, or bass) in the background, and brings forward the backup instruments. The Vocal Trainer has a ‘voice canceller’ which puts the original singing in the background, so you can hear the banjo, guitar and Dobro parts more clearly. The Guitar Trainer puts the guitar in the background so you can hear the mandolin and fiddle parts. YOU can also play or sing the lead, substituting your voice or instrument for the originals. The vocal trainer has a “voice changer” which pitches input up and down.

Each trainer will patiently play back the same part over and over, saving you the frustration of having to re-key it--- earning the boundless gratitude of those who listen---particularly when you are using headphones and maybe a mute. The headphones are not included, and you will need to buy batteries. We highly recommend the optional power pack, which is available at a modest charge. Also, consider the handy carrying case which contains self powered speakers and CD storage.
