Earl
Scruggs Standard Gibson 5-String Banjo " Here's the one that
stole the show in recent years for Gibson! By the 60's and 70's other companies
were giving this fine old instrument maker a run for it with their highly
decorative, blazing products. Someone sat up late at night at Gibson Corporate,
and an idea was born: why not contact Earl and copy his? The rest is marching
right straight into legend.
For this impeccable five string is a duplicate of the one the Grand Master
himself uses, right down to inlay, "heft", finish, and even the mineral
composition of the tone ring. Gibson wanted to duplicate a "pre-war" at
a price those of us who have not quite gotten around to hitting the Lotto
for, and VIOLA! here it is.
The peg head features intricate inlays curling around the planet style
pegs. The plate covering the end of the truss rod (let a professional adjust
it, please, unless you want the Golden Arches of McDonald's to come true
in your hands) has Earl's name engraved so you can fool yourself as to
whose hands are holding this treasure. The frets are heavier than the RB250's
of the 70's. Built of the finest figured maple, the genuine ebony on the
fretboard from the nut to the Mastertone plate down at the heel is impeccable.
The binding along the fingerboard and resonator is white with a tiny black
stripe sandwiched in the middle of the binding. The tuning pegs are extremely
smooth, geared vintage style pegs with pearloid buttons, which make tuning
effortless. The 5th is also a geared peg. Speaking of pegs, it comes stock
with the aforementioned, but the Keith "D" tuners can be added for the
2nd and 3rd strings for $199.95 . Earl's model was originally
gold plated, but after awhile that wore off, and so Gibson nickel plated
it instead. In time, the armrest will wear, particularly if your energetic
playing makes you (and your listeners) work up a sweat: we know nothing
can withstand that. One of the most sought after instruments around, You'll
be amazed and gratified at it's response. The slim neck seems to nestle
in between your thumb and index finger, and the response of this piece
is every bit as good as the old time "pre-war's". It can croon, like on
"Home Sweet Home". But let you dig your fingers into it, and it's got enough
bark and bite to blow back the hair of your most able friendly five-string
rival. Don't miss this one!
