Comparison: Fishman Rare Earth to
Jones pickup
Hi, JDMC:
I need some advice.. I need to get a banjo pickup...I want something
that does not alter or mute the sound when I am Not useing a amp, Not
sure about the Rare Earth pickup because it is set so close to the
head...and you know how banjos are would think temp changes would make
the head touch the pickup and deaded the sound when not useing it...I
really don't want to purchase a preamp to drive a pickup ...However I
may be thinking totally wrong on this.....Over course I would love the
have a volume control but........I don't want to use a external Mic..
Now....What would you suggest.......
Dan
Hi, Dan,
The Fishman Rare Earth is our most popular pickup among banjo players.
It has the pre-amp built in, which is simply a power booster. If your
system doesn't include a pre-amp then this will really help amplify your
banjo. Also, the tone quality is good - any pickup will alter your
sound a little, but the Fishman Company spent a lot of time researching
this and working with professional players.
The Jones is also an excellent pickup. It has been around a long time
and has been used by many professional players throughout the years. The
instructions say to put a credit card between the pickup and the head,
(and leave that amount of space between them). However, you may have to
experiment with this. It also has an excellent banjo tone quality, and
doesn't make the banjo sound like an electric guitar.
