Dear Janet and the JDMC staff,

I know that you are accustomed to receiving glowing comments from customers providing feedback on their most recent instrument purchases, etc. I however, would like to compliment you on a small, but significant (to me, at least) product that you have created; the JDMC thumbpicks.

Like many banjo players, I have spent more time than I care to admit, filing-down long thumbpick blades that stick out too far, and using heated needle-nose pliers to curl-inward the top edge of the thumbpick to avoid catching it on the 5th string.

JDMC thumbpicks are perfect "right out of the box" (I prefer the GP-9; I like the snug fit), and I really like the tone and attack they produce. I have never subscribed to the belief that bigger, thicker thumbpicks provide the best bass response; as I find that the JDMC's produce a very musical sound and possess a good ratio of rigidness vs. flexibility.

I commend JDMC for creating such an excellent (albeit $1.35) product. Your attention to detail is not lost on me.

Thanks for your help last week during our visit. We made it back to NY safely. I don't think the dulcimer will be that difficult to play...the learning curve for the dulcimer seems shorter than the banjo learning curve. I did not have the opportunity to play with my other purchases yet....still recovering from the trip.

Also, thank your mom for us for giving my daughter Erin your band's CD. The kids really enjoyed the Iowa song and the Hillbilly Rap (I know tracks 12 and 3 respectively because they were played so often). I'm sure they will be playing the songs for their friends and having a lot of fun with them....we also enjoyed the rest of the CD...good job! Did you ever consider cutting a kids CD?

I just recieved my new Snuffy Smith Bridge and I want to tell you that my banjo never sounded better. Thanks to the guidance from (I think it was Tom in tech support) in choosing the correct bridge it only took him a few minutes after describing the buzz problem, was he able to come up with the solution. My hammer ons and slides are the cleanest I have ever heard on this bango. NO MORE BUZZ!.

I just wanted to drop you a note to tell you that I love my new Eastman 615 flamed maple sunburst mandolin. It is fantastic in everyway, the set up is great and it sounds great. I'm very happy with it, it is always a pleasure to deal with your music shop. I have purchased several items from you and I'm always happy every time, everything I've purchased is just as advertised and your staff is very good to deal with. I'm just learning to play the mandolin, I'm also still learning to play the banjo and I guess that I will always be learning. There is always something new to learn, its wonderful and I'm a Bluegrass nut. I purchased the mandolin to give myself a brake from the banjo, when I get a little frustrated I put the banjo down and pick up the mandolin, I found that it not only helps but also I'm learning a new instrument. I highly recommend your shop to all of my friends down here in Florida, there is a few music shops down here that are geared to the bluegrass nuts like myself but I have learned to trust you and your staff because I know that when I place an order I'm going to get an instrument that is set up by people who know what they are doing and also care and have pride in what they do.

As far as the mandolin goes I would highly recommend the Eastman 615 to anyone who would like to get started in playing the mandolin. It is well worth the price you have on it and considering that you set it up so it plays as easy as it can and sounds great it's a great deal. Thank you so much, I also wanted to thank you again for the Goldtone OB 250+ banjo that I bought about three years ago, its great and still plays wonderful, I use it as my practice banjo. Also for all of the other items that I purchased such as strings, books, straps, tuners and videos. And also thanks so much for all the advice that you and your staff have provided to a knowledge challenged beginner.

Dear Janet, once again Michael came through!!!! I'm not sure of all that happened, but I ordered my new Eastman MD615SB on 11/6/07, and I was thinking I was to get it this week. However, when I called last week to check on the order, I was told I wouldn't get it until next week. Then, I spoke to Michael and he made things happen and I got it today. WOW! for two reasons, one that Michael did what he promised and I never in doubt that he wouldn't (this was a birthday present from my husband) and two the new Eastman plays and sounds so good! I am a new customer from Canada. I ordered a new head (Huber- the thicker one )and some other new parts for my banjo including you 5 string banjo Set-Up and Maintenance DVD. After watching the DVD, I took off the old head and kept going! before you know it I had mu banjo completely dissassembed. I cleaned and polished everthing according to your DVD and patiently put it back together again. After tuning it up and positioning the bridge I strumed my first chord. I COULDN'T BELIEVE THE DIFFERENCE. The tone was warm and rich and the action was dramatically changed from about 5/16ths at the 21st fret to about half of that. it plays , feels, looks like a brand new banjo.

You really know what you are doing. Thanks very much for your help. I have never found the wealth of banjo lore and knowledge anywhere in Canada here. You are my first choice for parts, or anything banjo related. I would love to come and see your store sometime and maybe meet you.

Your service is excellent and your endorsements or advice has never led me astray. Once in a while I find an item cheaper somewhere else (usually not so when shipping is added) but I would never not order from you is you have what I need or want. Your service is too good to worry over a few pennies, i.e.: an instruction sheet for both the Drum Dial and the Drum Torque by Jim himself. Now that is service. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I'm not sure when I'll be able to get to the post office, but I'll try to take care of it next week. I've putting in 14 hour days lately and it doesn't sync with the USPS office hours. I want to say that you guys are great. The stuff I have been getting is going toward the music development for a motion picture project of mine that is in development. It's a screenplay adaptation of a Mark Twain short story that will have an almost entirely Bluegrass score. It will be a while until it goes into pre-production because there are at least two projects ahead of it (hence, the 14hr. days!), but it is giving us the time to really put some things together that will be great. JDMC's great selection of items, easy ordering process and reasonable prices are fantastic, and now I see your customer service can be added to the list. I'll be ordering again soon. In fact, if I don't have the time to get to the post office, I'll just order another copy of the Skaggs DVD and throw this one out. I am a newcomer to Bluegrass Music and have recently bought a new Banjo. I also bought your Mel Bay "You can Teach Yourself Banjo" The book was very easy to use. I particularly liked the fact that within the first couple of pages you were already playing some banjo songs. I am making good progress on the banjo and am looking forward to getting to an "adequate" level of skill. I recently met with Mike Casey in Houston. His band "Bluegrass Solution" was one of the bands that inspired me to get into the Bluegrass culture. He is giving me some lessons. He recommended your site. I have found the site to be easy to use and very complete with everything a person could want (In the Banjo Category at least). I am sure I will be visiting again soon. To purchase an instrument such as a Gibson Granada, sight unseen, can obviously evoke some degree of stress and anxiety. Janet, JDMC is doing a fantastic job of serving its customer base and is always my first choice for anything I need. I know there are a lot of other people who feel exactly the same way. Jim has always been extremely helpful and up-front with me in answering my questions, and knowing that he probably has to deal with a bazillion of them every week from all over the world makes his timely and thoughtful responses that much more impressive.

I want to extend a hearty "thank ya'll'' for your patience and guidance in selecting a banjo. I was encouraged when I first called your shop and was quickly handed off to Janet. It's rare these days when the owner - especially someone of Janet's renown - picks up the phone to chat with a customer. There was no hard sell. Janet answered my questions and gave me a few options to noodle. When I called a second time she picked up as well. It's clear Janet loves her banjos and without steering me away from any instrument or brand she ever so gently nudged me toward the Gibson RB 4 that I ultimately bought. The price was extremely competitive - the best I could find. I about jumped out of my skin when it arrived. It's perfect. The sound is phenomenal. My banjo instructor was thrilled too and spent much of my lesson playing MY new instrument - to my delight.

Derek/Tom; I received the new custom radiused Snuffy Smith bridge, as well as the REMO heads, on Monday afternoon. I installed the Renaissance head and the new bridge last night and I am extremely pleased with the results. The old Stelling sounds great once again. I wanted to comment on my recent purchase.

I contacted Jim via e-mail for a price quote, and received a prompt e-mail. After discussing the price with a firend and mentor, Mike Mason (whom I understand Janet knows), I called and got Janet on the phone. She was very helpful in assiting me with what I consider a very important decision...a $1500.00 instrument purchase. While that may not be allot of money to some, that is about two weeks pay for me.

I called the next day and got Eli on the phone. He accepted my order, followed to the letter my instructions on how much to charge to my Check Card, and explained to me the process for doing 6 months no interest on the remaining balance.

I faxed my app, got an e-mail from Mike about my approval, and then got an e-mailed invoice from Eli.

Next day I spoke with Mike about the stock status of the banjo, and he assured me I would have my banjo in a week or so. I got an e-mail from Toni with a UPS tracking number, and 4 days later, my Deering Sierra arrived on my doorstep.

I must say that this is one of the most pleasant "internet" order experiences I have had. From start to finish, your staff was courteous, helpful and a pleasure to deal with.

I will definitely recommend JDMC to firends and family!!

Dear Janet, I just received my copy of your new "The Ultimate Bluegrass Songbook". I really think it's going to help me develop leads, fills, and backup techniques for a lot of songs that people around Southwestern Virginia like to jam on. Several songs are classic, but have stymied me because but I haven't found some of them anywhere else, or I lacked an up-the-neck technique for the song, or I wasn't able to find the right version or the right lick. Some that jump out at me include Gold Rush, Farewell Blues, Alabama Jubilee, Roanoke, Wheel Hoss, and Bugle Call Rag. Others are ones I've known, but you've given me something to use that I didn't have before.

Some of the phrasing and licks in the book/CD are right where I want to be stylistically, but I just haven't been able take that step until now.

The text is wonderful, and adds to my understanding of the culture and history of the songs, which is important to the whole bluegrass banjo tradition. For example, I never knew what "a wheel hoss" was, in all the meanings of that expression. Now that I do, it helps explain why I've always been drawn to the song and to the title.

I think you gave up some trade secrets with this one, Janet.

Erick, I just wanted to let you know that the OB 250+ you and Janet helped me configure over the phone is what I consider a fabulous sounding instrument! The setup seems to be right on-easy on the left hand and keeps the tuning really well.

You may remember that I was the guy who chose to have the maple resonator switched out with mahogany resonator also and had the head changed to clear. I also ordered it with the gold plating. Being a long time Martin D-35 picker, the banjo is totally new to me but after buying Janet's books with the CD and DVD, practicing is a true joy and I can sit for hours working out licks practicing rolls. I sit in an easy chair in front of my computer and easily go back and forth with DVD and book. I went ahead and performed with it this week for the first time with our Gospel band at church. WOW! I got a lot of fine comments after the services and after playing at the annual picnic.

You folks did the best job I could ever imagine in setting me up with the right banjo, books and software to get me started on a fast track. In my mind, there's no better banjo shop that takes a personal interest in quality and conformance to individual needs. You folks have another customer for life. THANKS! John

My wife and I visited Branson last week and with some information from Derek we also visited Eureka Springs. After that we visited your store and I brought my banjo along because I was having trouble with keeping it in tune and with buzzing strings (This is the Earl Scruggs Standard banjo that I bought from JCMC about a year and a half ago.) Eric welcomed us and had your newest luthier (Tom ?) look at it. About that time, Jim came into the store, greeted me and took over fixing my problem by tightening the head and adjusting the action. I looked around your store and really enjoyed seeing the Gibson room and your OMB as well. I even got to check out your shipping area down stairs. All in all, I was treated like a valued customer by very friendly people. You should be proud of the friendliness and dedicated professionalism of your folks. I really enjoyed my visit. I told Jim that someday I would really like to find a pre-war Granada to buy at a reasonable price. He thought that was pretty funny. Dear Janet, I hope you don't think I'm, "beatin' a dead horse," but wanted a little additional input from you, when you've got the chance.

Not long ago I purchased Banjo Scales in Tab. It's the best instruction book for me that I could have ever gotten and I suspected that when it first came out. I can tell by peoples faces that my playin' has improved. But anyway on the CD you state, in addition to one scale per month, that the scale should be memorized, and known inside and out before moving on. What I have done, and I'm now on the A scale, is memorize the scale and "circular scale," the single string stuff, the diatonic progressions, the locations of the particular chords and notes on the finger board, and some of the licks, and am sticking to one scale per month. In your opinion should I memorize everything or am I OK in my approach? Thanks for any help you could bestow!

If it weren't for you I'd a canceled by BNL subscription years ago, but as it is I've been a loyal follower since '79. You taught me backup.

Dear Ms. Davis, After reading your last article in the banjo newsletter ( banjo back-up work) I was absolutely compelled to email you and thank you so much for your outstanding work in the Banjo Newsletter. Several months ago my back failed me, c-spine disc problems and my fingers got all retarded and started doing weird things. Needless to say my banjo playing went to hell. I've only been playing for about 3 years and I thought I had made good progress for just 3 years. ( I played and studied accordion for many years) so my knowledge of basic music theory was a given. So while this stuff with my back and fingers was going on I had to do something on my banjo to keep learning even if I could not play a song all the way through because of my fingers, I still was persistent upon learning more about the banjo and banjo music theory. I soon became obsessed with your musical teachings on the banjo. I still can't play much song wise but......in the last several months I have learned so much. It was so easy to comprehend and you have a very unique talent for explaining music theory. I can't wait.....someday lord willing to apply all this technique to my banjo if I can ever play again. I had never played banjo before but thanks to your training materials I can already adapt some of my finger style guitar techniques and I'm having a lot of fun (even if wearing finger picks was a bit weird for a couple of days!). I didn't know anything about banjos except from listening from time to time to music CDs but the sound is incredibly loud, bright and beautiful to me. All my friends are curious about it since banjos are not that common around here.

Coming to your new store was a very pleasant experience. Everyone was extremely nice and helpful. It is a pleasure to get to play an instrument or instruments to hear how they sound.

I really enjoy the two Gold Tones I bought. The EBM has what I have been looking for and I am finding I am having to leave some parts of the roll due the sustain it has. John Hartford talked about this in the teaching videos he made for Homespun.

I must say, however, that going up stairs and playing the "Green Machine" was torturous, in a very pleasant way. I got lost listening to all the musical possibilities and was most tempted by the set up. But, I know that I do not need the set up and I will envy the person who gets it.

Again, my wife and I had a great time and still will stop by on our trip in September.

Janet, I thought that I should send a follow up email letting you know how things are progressing with my new Granada. There is no doubt in my mind that I made the right choice, not only in going with the Granada, but also in deciding to do business with you and your staff. I have spent numerous hours playing my new banjo (and have the sore fingers to prove it!) and my Granada keeps getting better and better. I took it to band practice last Thursday night and the band members spent the first ~20 minutes of rehearsal ogling over the beauty of the maple and engraved gold plating. Afterwards, our reso player came over and remarked that my Gibson sounds 10x better than my Stelling or OME. I am still amazed at how well the Gibson sound fits in a bluegrass ensemble. While taking a break, we were listening to "Are There Any Stars In My Crown" (Cox Family from the O Sister! CD) in preparation for starting to work it up, and I couldn't believe how much my banjo sounds like Ron Block's Gibson. Granted, I am a looong way from playing 1/2 as well as Ron! :) Even though the preceding may sound a bit nutty, I am really excited, as I can now see why the Gibson Mastertone has remained such a standard of bluegrass banjo. I needed a few days to live with my new banjo before reconciling my expectations (which were admittedly quite enormous) with what my new banjo was capable of producing. I have dreamed of getting a Granada for several years now, never thinking that I could afford one and I am not disappointed in the least. I think that I now have an heirloom to pass down to my children when they are old enough to play. I can't begin to thank you enough for the excellent service, the *great* price and your concern for my satisfaction with my new banjo. I recently acquired a Nechville American Vintage banjo when Tom was at Wintergrass. After some considerable thought, I decided I should get a Calton to offer it as much protection as possible, though it was far more than I had ever spent on a case before.
I ordered one from you folks, and it arrived yesterday. I could not be more pleased with it. Your customer service people were very helpful, and it arrived right on schedule. It was well packed, and in pristine condition when it got here. The case fits my new five string perfectly, and now I'm ready for a road trip.

Received my Staghorn banjo yesterday, in excellent order and packed, by the way, very well. All was fine, and more than meets my expectations. The wood in this thing is GORGEOUS and the sound just Barks like a ROTTWEILLER. Just happened to have had regular Tues. night practice with "Lock Stock and Barrel" (one of 2 BG bands I currently play with). The Staghorn really blew them away, but has a really mellow tone when played softer and/or the "y" position. My hat's off to you and your staff for a great service, and to Mr. Stelling for the finest banjos on Earth.

Got the package yesterday. We live more than one hundred miles from the nearest grocery store, and nearly THREE hundred miles from the nearest town with a music store, so "overnight" here means two days. Extremely happy to get it in any case! This is the first info I've gotten on how to rosin the bow, and the first rosin. Not knowing anything about fiddles, I thought the fine tuner would be necessary to make the thing work, but now know that it already had four installed.

Was so very happy to get the package because now she is already making some very pleasing sounds, is tickled to death to have such a beautiful looking and sounding instrument (never played anything before but is doing just fine in spite of our advanced years, and my 5-string is just TOO HEAVY for her). Janet, I received my RB-75 JD Crowe today. I was practicing on my RB-100 when the UPS guy arrived. I took it right out of the box and practiced for two hours. I am amazed at the difference in the two banjos. After wiping it off and placing it back in the case I picked up the RB-100 for a few more minutes and it was very hard to go back to that one after playing the new RB 75. Dear Janet, After almost a year of corresponding with you, I finally was able to understand what instrument would satisfy my needs, so I ordered an OB 250 Gold Tone. I placed the order by phone, and the man who took my order was very helpful and informative. Although I was told it might take a week or two for delivery, it arrived yesterday (the third working day after I placed the order). In fact, I went into town during a break from work, found the UPS guy making a delivery to a store in the middle of town, and got my banjo off the truck from him so I wouldn't risk missing the delivery at home.

After work last night, and again, before work this morning, I started learning to pick from some of the instructional videos you sold me during the "fact-finding" period when I was considering the purchase. Probably because of the time you spent explaining things to me, and your patience, I wound up with a banjo I'm really very happy with, in every way. I also have learning materials that I'm comfortable with, and that match my needs and abilities quite nicely.

The banjo sounds great. It looks great. "Monster pull-off's" are a breeze on the OB 250's fingerboard (the Terry Baucom tape). I still have a lot to learn about banjo set-ups, but what I do know tells me that this one is set up beautifully. Even the finger picks seem to fit well, and aren't causing any pain (an unexpected pleasure). I'm going to want another dozen of those picks. Nobody sells ProPik Double Wraps around here (or, if they do, they must be all gone by the time I get to the stores.) Thank you very much, Jay V

Hey Janet, I discovered your website several months back. It's nicely laid out, easy to navigate, and you've got a nice variety of stuff at attractive prices. (I've pointed folks on Web discussion boards like Big Road Blues, Temple of Blues and Guitar.com looking for things like resonator guitar parts to it on several occasions.) I finally ordered my Quarterman cones and ebony-capped bridge saddle to upgrade my Johnson Tricone from you last Sunday night, and they arrived Friday afternoon. Very nicely packed, too. Can't beat that kind of service! (Played in church this morning with the new stuff installed.) :-D

Fitting the saddle was a bigger job than I'd anticipated, but the combination of the new cones and saddle has made a world of difference! I'd thought the Tricone sounded good before (other than having an annoying tendency to buzz at loud volumes), but it has KILLER tone and volume now! I really like having a flat saddle, too, as I play mostly slide. Next step is to put on a flat nut, which I probably should've ordered this time while I was at it.

BTW, I like your music samples on the site, too! :-)

Hi Janet. This is Rob F. I just received my banjo yesterday and all is well. It has a good feel and she's a beauty. It even has the sound that I hoped it would. Buying online if you have not heard the instrument is probably not the best way to go, but I put some faith in the testimonials I was reading and your advice. I also watched the video of yours and actually started putting slides and hammer-ons into picking patterns. Having put some time in on the guitar has helped, and hindered a bit I guess. I have to break the pattern of 6th string root note because I tend to automatically go there. Like on the forward-backward roll, Instead of going to the 3rd string on "one" w/thumb, my habit tells me the low note is 6th or maybe 5th (guitar E or A). When I go there I get a high "G" and it startles me. But I see it in my mind and it probably helps me concentrate on it more. I can't believe how well I was doing after watching the video. Thanks again.

The Kentucky KM-630 arrived today. It was in great shape - great packaging - it was even almost in tune! I am thrilled with it already, I am surprised how much of my mandolin skills I still retained after 30 plus years away from the instrument. I got "Woody's Rag" down again in about 5 minutes and am working on stretching out my left fingers for the old G and D chords - "Rawhide" here I come!

My first order from you arrived today! Very speedy delivery, and everything was in perfect condition. I can already tell that the comfort level I'm getting from the new cradle strap and the ACRI picks are going to make a big difference in playing; everything feels very "right" now. I've only had time to Listen to the John Hartford CD and watch a little of the John Hartford Banjo video I ordered (being a Missourian, you know I gotta like John...but who doesn't? He will be missed), but I'm sure the Murphy Method videos and the Jamming video will be just as pleasurable. I'm looking forward to getting the Twanger (which is on back order) - I've only been playing banjo for a couple of months, but I've played guitar for about 17 years, so it's my right hand that needs LOTS of work.

Dear Janet Davis, As a BNL reader for the past half dozen years, I have enjoyed your column for the high quality of the writing and the great tabs. Your June 2001 column (on the diminished chord) is just so good that I felt I had to email you with my sincere thanks.

I have read many explanations about diminished and augmented chords but I never before could retain afterwards any details of what I had read. (Okay, so I'm 62, and my memory ain't what it was.) But your June column is so clear, so complete in all the details, so full of everything related to the diminished chord, that I really think I have got it at last. As a sometime teacher and writer myself (and closet banjo picker in retirement), I am just terrifically impressed by your column!

On a less technical issue, I want to tell you how much I enjoy your tabs, musical style and choice of songs. (This is not quite the same as the text of my first email, but you are welcome to use these comments also in advertising, if you want.) I have been learning your tab of Freight Train from MelBay's 2000 Banjo book, and enjoying it a lot, as that was one of my favorite songs from the folksong era (I'm pretty sure Joan Baez covered the song back then very nicely). I have taken the liberty of changing your version slightly to make it easier for me to play, I hope that's okay. I don't play for anyone's entertainment except my own, so you don't have to worry that I will play your song somewhere for money. (Ha! The thought of me making money by playing the banjo! I invented the term "closet picker".)

And your website ain't too shoddy, either. Please keep on doing what you are doing.

Hi Guys, I just wanted to thank you all for the excellent service I received recently when purchasing a Kentucky KM 150S for my 7 yr. old son. Your communication throughout the process was excellent. I appreciate the fact that when you guys noticed something wrong with the original mandolin I ordered when you were setting it up you didn't send it on as a lot of other folks probably would. As a matter of fact, a lot of other companies don't even take the time or have the knowledge to perform a good setup. Hi Janet, I just wanted to take a minute to send you an email regarding the service I have received from you, Jim, and your staff. The only way I could be more pleased with your music shop is if it was just down the block from my house.

As you know, I live in NC and there are several music stores near my house, however, I have become a loyal customer of Janet Davis Music for several reasons.

First and foremost would be service and price. I have had the best service and the best price available through your shop. I've saved quite a bit of money over time by purchasing from you. Plus, I've had super fast shipping from you as well. It seems that no sooner do I place the order than the UPS guy is back knocking on my door again. Actually, I've become quite familiar with the driver for my route now.

I've purchased everything from your shop. I've bought using your secure server and I've also placed orders over the phone. Several times either you or Jim have personally helped me, answered questions, researched things, and generally helped out a less knowledgeable beginning musician like myself. I appreciate that. Everyone I have dealt with at JDMC has been helpful, friendly, and just plain wonderful.

I also want to thank you for putting out some wonderful instructional banjo materials through Mel Bay. In fact, your "You Can Teach Yourself Banjo" book, cd, and video were so well put together, easy to understand, and insightful that I stopped taking banjo lessons all together. I couldn't see paying by the hour to take lessons from a teacher when I could purchase that series of yours and take lessons from a virtuoso like yourself. I've saved a ton of money just in that series alone and I've learned more from your series than I learned from several months of lessons from another teacher. Also, I love the convenience of these tapes. I can take a lesson when it is convenient for me. I can sit down and have a lesson whenever I need one and not have to worry about scheduling it in, and for somebody with a busy schedule like mine, that means a lot! You're a great banjo player and you're helping me to develop my skills. I admire your talent, respect your opinions, and have always found you more than ready to help me with your extensive knowledge of the instruments and products you sell. Both you and Jim have been instrumental (pun intended) in my growth in knowledge of instruments, (especially since I purchased your and Jim's video on Banjo Set Up and Maintenance - which is essential for any banjo picker to have!) and my learning to play. I can and have highly recommended anybody to visit your webpage and shop at your store. Whether they are looking for a beginner's instrument or a top of the line instrument, whether they are looking for replacement parts for an instrument or instructional courses, tapes and videos; you've got it all and at the best price! One of these days, I'm going to make it out to one of your banjo camps and out to your store.
